Best service I have been to in quite some time. Singing was amazing, sermon was straight to my heart, and it was very heart felt.

Valley Presbyterian is a physically beautiful mainline church. Having shed membership, this still sizeable church is working on a “turn around” with “twice the staff and half the congregation” of the lead pastor’s prior church. You will feel most at home at this church if you are white (97% of members), senior (68% of members are 56 years old or older), wealthy (located in Paradise Valley), and firmly in support of "traditional marriage" (this is NOT a gay affirming PCUSA church). (Source data for statistics: PCUSA website)
While Presbyterian Church USA, VPC’s denomination, has swung strongly towards affirming gay marriage... VPC has moved decisively against it. VPC reportedly studied the issue of gay marriage for 10 months, affirmed traditional marriage, then purged themselves of an "agitated group" who still affirmed gay marriage.
Our experience: New to the area, and closely identifying with Presbyterian Church USA theology (attended a PCUSA church for many years and was moved by Jack Rogers's gay affirming "Jesus, the Bible, and Homosexuality")… our family recently checked out the church by attending a contemporary worship service. We do happen to be white (check), upper middle class (check), heterosexual family with kids (check).... but are also a gay affirming family (gulp). As one might expect, the head pastor and several members of the congregation initially rolled out the red carpet for us… until we disclosed that, like many external members of the PCUSA, our family affirms gay marriage AND one of our young kids does not fit typical gender stereotypes (pink = girl, blue = boy). He much prefers the rainbow, but especially pink.
We then asked, regardless of this specific church’s official stance on gay marriage (we did not know this specific church's history coming in), if there were members inside the church who were LGBT affirming and who could serve as the hands and feet of Christ to our child.
Per a series of follow on email exchanges, the lead pastor of VPC tactfully encouraged us to find another church. He suggested that not all folks at VPC had our "gracious spirit", cited that if our family were to openly support our child and affirm gay marriage at VPC “these issues would tempt the agitated group who’ve left to re-engage”, and that our family "may feel safer" elsewhere.
Got it. That “agitated group” (gay affirming PCUSA members) was the target group I sought to serve my child. They are now gone… and not really wanted back either.
While the lead pastor's message was hard to hear, he was at least transparent about his church’s current stance and was open to providing several recommendations for alternate churches. Furthermore, I do believe this church’s current leadership team genuinely believes they are doing right scripturally.
Looking to the future... the greater Presbyterian church has a rich history in being a first mover on many social issues (segregation, women ordination, divorce & remarriage, and now marriage equality)... and it is my hope and prayer that this specific PCUSA church gets there on marriage equality as well... sooner rather than later.
(If marriage equality is a meaningful/relevant issue for you... and you want to know what church our family ends up, or want to know what your church options are in the area... please feel free to ping me. For better or worse, we are quickly becoming area experts!)
Again, VPC has a beautiful Jesus centric campus... with people who mean well & love Christ. May God once more help this church fill its campus and ministry to overflowing... ideally with a bit more diversity.Added August 23, 2016 by Elliot
